Putting the ball in play Nilly, Upper level umpires tell me conflicting things about when I should put the ball in play and how to do it. Could you clear this up for me? – Signed, Dead or Alive Any time the ball is dead, it should be put in play before the next pitch or play, when the pitcher is on the rubber and the batter is in the box. For example, you should put the ball in play at the start of the game and at the start of each half inning. You should also put the ball in play after foul balls, time outs or any other time the ball has been dead. To put the ball in play, you must point to the pitcher with your right hand. You may also say, "Play!" as you point. It is not necessary to give the vocalization but it helps make it clear for everyone when runners are on base. It is also a good idea to give a good strong "Play!" at the start of the game. Erik Nilson answers your umpire rules, mechanics and other questions in "NAIL it!" as needs arise.
