(Read full story) Sunday, January 24, 2010 It's Time! It is that time of year again. It is time to begin conditioning our minds and bodies for the 2010 baseball season. For NBUA, the season starts with the General Meeting on Jan. 26 at the Mercer Island community Center. This will be your first opportunity to get together with fellow umpires and learn about what is new and exciting for the 2010 season. Some of the things you will hear about at the meeting include the 2010 Member Service Agreement, association finances, the 2010 training and evaluations programs and other important information. (Read full story) Wednesday, October 14, 2009 Brancheau, Carlstedt, Coy and Philbeck return for 2-year terms The Northwest Baseball Umpires Association held its Annual Meeting on October 12 at the WIAA Renton headquarters where the results of the Board elections were announced. All six of the 2009 Board candidates were in attendance along with three interested members. Elected to 2-year terms were Mike Brancheau, Kris Carlstedt, Gary Coy and John Philbeck. Charlie Atterbury and Reams Goodloe finished just behind these four in the tally. (Read full story) Wednesday, October 7, 2009 Coy awarded the Eshelman, promotions, other banquet tidbits The NBUA held its annual banquet and golf tournament on Saturday October 3 at Mill Creek Golf and Country Club. It was a first class facility and everyone had an incredible evening. Earlier in the day the eight foursomes had a beautiful day for golf at the Country Club with the team of Scott Guhlke, Kim Stover, Curt McGuire, and Andre Kaluna taking home the trophy (Assignors Cup as they now seem to be calling it). This year we had a guest speaker, our very own Mike Muchlinski, who spoke to us about passion, commitment, and excellence. It was an exciting evening with a packed crowd in the banquet room. The 2009 NBUA Annual Meeting and Board of Directors Election will take place on Monday October 12, 2009. The meeting will be held at the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) building located at 435 Main Ave. South, Renton. For those who want to cast a paper ballot that evening, the polls will open at 6 p.m. and will close at 7 p.m. (see below for online voting information). There were some candles, well loved stuffed animals, other odds and ends and a small, old, used baseball mitt, just lying on the steps up from the fields at the school. Very little was written on the photo attached to the rail other than an empty plea to "Stop Violence". No dates, no description of the reason for the little memorial, little else to express the enormity of the grief and loss from this tragedy. Jack Miller joined NBUA in 1973 when this organization was in its infancy. For many years on the playgrounds and high school fields, in college stadiums and yes, during the 1979 Major League umpire strike in the Kingdome, Jack Miller devoted himself to umpiring and his tremendous passion for the game. Jack had an intense commitment to the kids. Jack once said "whether you have a good game or not, always remember you are there for the game and you are there for the kids." Apparently he assumed incorrectly that the same umpires would be the officials for his son's game and, while in the parking lot trying to negotiate the appropriate bribe, he became enmeshed in an actual conversation with these stout fellows. For some reason he asked about umpiring and they provided the name and phone number of Jack Miller. (Read full story) Monday, May 14, 2007 Steve Hilgendorf has been named to work the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) baseball championships to be held at Lower Columbia College in Longview. The tournament will run from May 24 through May 28. The following umpires have been assigned by the WIAA to work the following high school regional assignments on May 19 and the high school finals on May 25 and 26.
