Jack Miller
1932-2007

On October 18, 2007 NBUA lost a longtime member, president, assignor and many of us lost a good friend.

Jack Miller joined NBUA in 1973 when this organization was in its infancy.   For many years on the playgrounds and high school fields, in college stadiums and yes, during the 1979 Major League umpire strike in the Kingdome, Jack Miller devoted himself to umpiring and his tremendous passion for the game.

Jack had an intense commitment to the kids. Jack once said "whether you have a good game or not, always remember you are there for the game and you are there for the kids."   (Read full story)

Sunshine Committee alive & well
For years your association has tried to pass along a bit of Sunshine to those who have been injured or perhaps lost a family member. Some years we are very quiet, other years we have plenty to report. We want to raise your awareness of Sunshine. Since we've changed our method of assigning voice contact is at a minimum and we rarely hear of injuries etc. Brian Gooch will be hosting Sunshine for 2008. We understand that some wish to remain private, but we want you to know the NBUA as a whole is concerned about health issues of our membership.  (Read full story)

NBUA Represented at Evans Desert Classic

By Dick Harrigill

It was a sunny, hot week on the ball field - about 90 degrees. In November. In
Arizona. Five NBUA umpires were calling outs & safes, balls & strikes, fair &
foul, and interference & obstruction at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson. They
were students at the Jim Evans' Academy of Professional Umpiring Desert Classic,
a bootcamp for umpires who are serious about doing a good job. The Kino Sports
complex has several fields, and is the spring training facility of the Arizona
Diamondbacks and the Chicago White Sox. (Read full story)

Behind the Mask: All Hail the "Chief"

In the spring of 1996 Jay Neff was at Kent-Meridian High School to watch his son play in a game that was following the varsity contest. Apparently he assumed incorrectly that the same umpires would be the officials for his son's game and, while in the parking lot trying to negotiate the appropriate bribe, he became enmeshed in an actual conversation with these stout fellows. For some reason he asked about umpiring and they provided the name and phone number of Jack Miller. (Read full story)

Behind the mask: The California Perspective

NBUA was the very fortunate beneficiary of a seasoned Southern California transplant in 2006. Frank Nascimento brought us his eleven years of umpiring experience, his background as a trainer in the Independent Baseball Officials Organization, his eight years of Southern California high school ball through the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and his year-round involvement in officiating up to the junior college level down south (wouldn't that be a dream come true for many of us) and joined the 2006 NBUA rookie class. Another successful year for NBUA

The 2006 Baseball season is about over and it was another successful year on and off the field. Once again, NBUA made more than 10,000 umpire assignments representing more than $500,000 in game fees. Congratulations to all of our members for their hard work and professionalism. NBUA remains one of the premier amateur umpire associations in the nation.

In addition to our efforts on the field, the organization has achieved numerous accomplishments during 2006. Below is a partial list of those accomplishments: (Read full story)
