By David Natali Long time NBUA umpire Darrell Mason reached the pinnacle of NCAA baseball umpiring when he received a call this morning informing him that he had been selected to umpire the 2006 College World Series. Hard work, hustle and dedication are attributes that all partners over the years have recognized of Darrel and they have paid off in this exciting assignment.
Mason began his umpiring career in 1984 at the age of 19 with NBUA and quickly progressed in amateur baseball. This success led him to pursue umpiring as a career. A graduate of Brinkman Umpiring School, Mason had an extensive minor league career that culminated with his final assignment in the International League and Major League assignments during the 1995 umpires strike. Darrel is a staff member of the Pacific-10 Conference, the Western Athletic Conference and the West Coast Conference. Mason has been a valued trainer and mentor to NBUA umpires for many years. The Championship Series and select games from the College World Series will be broadcast on ESPN and their affiliate stations. The College World Series begins on June 16, 2006.
