Apply for Eshelman Scholarship

By Brian Gooch
Vice-President

Every year the NBUA gives out one or two scholarship awards of $150 each to its members.   This award is to help finance your training to become a better umpire. Last year the awards went to Danny Oliver and Kim Stover. Danny went to pro school and Kim attended a one week camp.

If you've attended an accredited umpire camp and wish to apply for the scholarship, you must first write a letter to me stating what you are doing to better yourself and send it in promptly. The scholarship will be awarded at our business meeting in March. The deadline for applying is February 20.

George Eshelman was an NBUA member for well over 25 years. He was mentor to many, and ran our training program for 10 years. George was a board member for 20 years was NBUA president. His most difficult and favorite time in NBUA was assigning and working the Seattle Mariners in 1979 when the major league umpires went on strike. NBUA worked 23 games in the Kingdome that year.
